“Your car needs to be inspected this month,” my husband, the most organized man in the world, told me on September 1st.
“Um, okay,” I said half listening.
The next day he reminded me again. Again I didn’t really react. After all, I had a whole month, right?
“Are you going to make an appointment to get your car inspected?” He asked on day three. Since it was easier to drop my car off than have this conversation every day, I put my coffee cup down and called the shop by my office and arranged to have my car inspected that morning.
As I was headed into work I started thinking. How could my car need to be inspected? My car was the Hurricane Sandy replacement vehicle. We didn’t get it until November or December… Didn’t I have time?
As soon as I pulled off the highway I checked my windshield. Sure enough I had until December. I called the shop to cancel, but they convinced me to just bring it in anyway, which I did.
I was at work for about an hour, when my phone rang. It was the mechanic. I figured my car was all set. “All good?” I asked him.
He took a pregnant pause before answering. “Um. Not exactly. We were bringing your car to the inspection place and we were on the back road behind your office, you know the curvy one?”
“Yeah,” I replied as I read emails. The mechanic was famous for pulling my leg, so I was only half listening.
“Well, as my guy was driving a squirrel ran across the road. He swerved to avoid it and he hit a tree. He got so scared he had to go to the hospital because he had chest pains. Your car doesn’t look too bad, but it is leaking anti-freeze so you can’t drive it….”
I started to chuckle. “Good one! So, can I come by and pick up my car now?”
“No.” He replied, his voice almost cracking. “I am not joking this time. This really happened.”
Fortunately the driver was fine. My car on the other hand is still in the body shop. Lesson learned: Sometimes procrastination pays off!
