Oh Irene – Part 2

Despite the weather reports that were growing ominous, and the invites from friends and relatives who live inland to stay with them when the storm hit, my husband, Marc, and I really believed Irene was more hype than reality. Sure, we had an ear peeled for the reports, but we figured it was just going to be another storm to hit the beach that we could ride out, along with my mom who was visiting from out of town.

We weren’t concerned at all on Wednesday, even as my mom shared stories of Wilma. She knew firsthand about how rough a hurricane could be. After all, she moved to Florida two weeks before Wilma hit, and was out of power for close to two weeks after. We weren’t worried on Thursday night either, even as my cousin we were having dinner with urged us to stay at their house.

On Friday morning, I woke up at 5:00 AM. My only thought related to Irene was that I should move some stuff out of the basement, just in case we lost power and flooded. After all, if we lose power on a good day, the sump pumps stop working and we flood within two hours. So, that is what I did. I carried Marc’s drums up from the basement before he woke up. Since he pulled his back out a couple of weeks ago, I didn’t want him to have to do all the lifting. Also, since we are in the process of redoing our kitchen storage, and have everything in the basement, I moved all that stuff around too.

Friday morning was a glorious day. I guess that old saying, “the calm before the storm” rings true. But, by 7:00 the reports began getting grimmer, so my mom and I started taping up the large windows. Marc bungeed and moved large objects off our balcony and deck. He was careful not to move everything, so we could enjoy the furniture and BBQ later…

By late afternoon / early evening, we realized there would be no leisurely outdoor enjoyment. Irene was really coming, and she was serious. Marc and I moved everything that we could off our decks and balconies and brought it inside. What we couldn’t move, we bungeed. I stood still for a few minutes, and I thought Marc was going to bungee me to a pole! Since we have several neighbors who are elderly or don’t live at the beach year round, Marc and I did the same thing at their property.

As Marc and I feverously worked, my mom taped the remaining windows, and kept a close eye on the weather reports. She learned of our mandatory evacuation. Since we live on an island, during an evacuation, the authorities raise the bridges after the set time, to prevent anyone from going on or off the island. Once we learned about this evacuation, we knew we had no choice to leave. We made arrangements to go to my cousin’s in the morning.

Friday night was surreal. The vast majority of my neighbors left already or didn’t head to the beach for the weekend. It was extremely dark, and eerily quiet, except for the loudest waves ever. While I wasn’t scared before, I lost my calm on Friday night. I think I was most concerned at how Alex, the cat, was going to react to his relocation, especially since my cousin has two dogs! Neither Marc nor I slept a wink.

Saturday morning was another calm day. It would have been easy not to heed the warnings and stay put at the beach, but we didn’t. As we drove to my cousin’s house, we saw all the houses and stores boarded up. It was a surreal sight, which along with the vibe of the people we passed and interacted with was reminiscent, to me of 9/11.

    Wow, something we hope we never have to deal with here! The mom remembers the Ice Storm of 1998, long before we even were born, and that was terrible in its own destructive way.

    Living in Florida ourselves, we know when they say GO, we GO. We live inland but found out in 2004 with Hurricanes Charley, Frances, and Jeanne, no place is really that safe when it comes to major hurricanes.

      Amber – you are right.. you floridians really know your hurricanes… my mom moved down there two weeks before Wilma… She was visiting this week. She was so helpful…. It is amazing though how so many people in areas that weren’t evacuated still don’t have power…

      Random – thanks… I can understand why people want to ride it out.. part of me did too.. but I know that where I live, if they call a mandatory evacuation, after a period of time they raise the bridges and you CAN’T get off the island. I would never want to risk that… Al Roker, and all the media urged everyone to take it serious. I have never heard so much concern before.. makes me really wonder, with all the warnings, why anyone wouldn’t take it serious….

    It’s funny that you said that you weren’t really scared. I’ve been through two or three hurricanes in my life. I don’t remember ever really taking precautionary measures. This time was really no different I guess. I brought everything in including my plants and flowers that were in pots, pool stuff went away, even put garden decor away. I thought it was over kill, but I did it anyway.

    Good thing I did!

    Even though in NE PA there was water damage, trees down, and stuff, I’m glad I overkilled! The wind was UN-BE-LIEVABLE! The rain was pounding but it was the wind that was the scariest! I was SO relieved when it finally settled down on Sunday afternoon!

    You just can’t underestimate Mother Nature. She’ll knock your block off!

I have never heard such urges to take the situation serious before… While I did think it was overkill at the time, I am glad that I did listen… there were places where the ocean reached the roads. We got really lucky, but I don’t want to think what could have been if the storm was worse. So many people here still don’t have power…. We returned home on Sunday afternoon and walked to the beach. I had to hold onto the fence.. it was so windy. If I didn’t… I would have blown away! mother nature… she sure can be a bitch!

    Like Amber above who comment about the Hurricane season of 2004 — we live in Florida too. WE were hit with 5 storms within a 6 week period. I know the worst one was September 5,2004. i know because that was my birthday. It was the longest night of my life. Every 30 minutes the NOAA weather radio was going off (power was gone by this point) it was dark, and very stormy and they were broadcasting ever nearing tornadoes spawned off from FRances. Oh my what a horrid night. We were lucky no structural damage, but we were without power for many days and nights. I am so glad to know as we sit today that you are all OK!

      Abby – I can’t even imagine how you handled 5 storms in 6 weeks… You are amazing! What a birthday present….UGH! Bet that is a birthday you will never forget… It sounds horrible… We kept getting automated calls giving us information and reports. Also, where we were staying never lost power, so we were able to watch the news. I swear, it made the situation worse – really frightening you…. You were so lucky to not have any structural damages, but not having power for many days and nights is horrible… So many people by me still don’t have power… I am shocked that we only lost power for 15 minutes or so… but, if we lost for any period of time, my house would be full of ocean… Our sump pumps haven’t stopped running (at all) since Saturday. I am praying they don’t fry…. I hope the rest of the hurricane season goes smoothly for you… you floridians sure know how to handle the storms!

    We are glad you are safe. I moved to Baton Rouge, Louisiana in 2001 and went through Katrina, Rita, Ike, Gustav, ect , ect. Although the weather reporters sometimes get it wrong, it is just not worth taking the chance, cause if it hits, it really hits! I’m pretty happy to now live in Georgia (since 2008), but it was strange watching coverage of a hurricane on TV and not making preparations. Headbumps for Alex experiencing his first (?) hurricane.

      Madness, trouble & Squish – Thanks so much! wow – you poor thing… you really saw your share of storms… I agree with you… while evacuating was a pain, I would rather be safe than sorry. The trouble of it so isn’t worth the risk…. I can only imagine how great / odd it felt to watch the storm coverage and not worry this year… My mom came in from FL a few days before. When she left, she was worried that she didn’t plan for anyone to put up her hurricane shutters before she left, and then when she got here, she learned that it was missing FL heading to NY! It was pretty weird she missed it there to have it here…. Alex thanks you for the headbutts! He has seen his share of storms, but I don’t think ever a hurricane, and he NEVER had to evacuate his house & travel overnight anywhere (except for his hospital stay with his tail amputation). You will be SO proud of how he handled it all… I plan to write about it this weeekend…

    I live Upstate– Central NY right in the middle– and we got hit very hard. Harder than you guys, I think (according to reports). Some folks were under 6-10 feet of water!!!! And we are way, way inland. We just can’t handle the water anymore. I have 3 sump pumps n my basement and God forbid the power should go off. Even on a good day with no rain, the pumps turn on eveyr half hour. It’s just UNREAL all this rain we’ve had for over a decade now.

      Rebecca – sorry… I am trying.. but I am still trying to get myself back to normal and in a good grove…. I am still feeling the after affects at work… I will write the next installment this weekend (suspense is good, after all, right?)

      I think you guys did get hit harder than most of us downstate, but I have several friends, also inland, who had 6 feet of water in thier houses and are still without power… Your house sounds like mine. We have 2 sump pumps running at all times, and have them on battery backups with alarms that call our phones if we lose power. We completely flood if they are off for more than an hour….. They have run CONSTANTLY since Sat…. I am praying they don’t fry, although, I think marc has a spare…
