Malled….

As I sat down between two woman at a BlogHer session last week, I couldn’t understand why the lady to my right was sitting there reading a book.  It struck me as strange; couldn’t she find a better time and place to catch up on her reading?  But hey, to each their own….

 

As the session came to an end she closed up the book.  The woman sitting to her right spotted that she was reading Malled by Caitlin Kelly.  “I just finished that book,” she exclaimed, “isn’t it great?”

 

The woman to my right replied, “I just started it, but it is.”  Then, pointing to the lady to my left, she explained, “She is the author.”

 

The pieces fell into place for me then….

 

I started talking to Caitlin and immediately loved her… she was sweet, smart and funny.  She also gave me a copy of Malled which I began reading the very next day.

 

I too loved the book…..

 

Malled tells the story about what happens when Caitlin, a highly educated journalist, who speaks several languages and has traveled the world, interviewing many famous people and politicians, enters the world of retail after losing her job to obtain a steady flow of income.  Malled is very insightful and provides a glimpse at what life is on the opposite end of the cash wrap (or for those of us who never worked retail, the cash register).

 

While I never worked retail, I did spend over ten years of my life in a service position. I worked during college, and after I passed the CPA exam and began working as an accountant, as a waitress, so I was able to easily relate to her story.   Working at any service position puts you at the mercy of those you serve.  The customers, while some may be extremely nice and friendly (I had one who invited me to her house every Christmas), others look down upon you (even though they know nothing about you) and feel that they could use you as their punching bag, taking out their frustrations on you, as you just plaster a smile on your face in return.

 

I think that Malled  is an excellent read, as it would resonate with so many people.  Anyone who has ever worked in any form of service industry would love Malled because, like me you would easily relate – as your own memories and experiences come flooding back to you.  Anyone who manages employees can learn a thing or two from the story as well, because Caitlin shows how real customer service stems from the top, and if that leadership or respect for the employee is lacking, the employee’s output and caring will suffer as well.  Finally, anyone who has ever shopped in a store, or ate in a restaurant, would appreciate this book as well, as it is very thought provoking, making you think about your own beliefs and your own actions….

    I’ll have to take a look at this one. I worked both in retail and as a waitress and boy, there are stories hiding there. Overall, I had a pretty good experience. But I came in as a student working her first jobs not as a journalist needing to bring home a salary.
