Hello, is it me you’re looking for?

The other day, at work, I was meeting with a vendor who over time has become more of a friend to me. As we worked, we started chatting about multi-tasking, smart phones, and how we are both constantly connected. “I am the worst,” she said. “I am constantly on my phone emailing when I drive.” I scolded her, since that is one of my biggest pet peeves.

A few days later, I emailed her a few questions so that we could resolve our project. Seconds after I hit send, I got this reply:

Sent: Wednesday, May 18, 2011 11:10 AM
To: Hilary @ Work
Subject: Re: call me

Driving can u call my cell 555 1234

I quickly punched in the numbers. As soon as the phone was answered, I started talking. “One of these days, you are going to kill yourself.”

“Um, excuse me?”

“One of these days, you really are going to kill yourself. You are so bad, with all your emailing and driving. One of these days, something really is going to happen to you.”

“Who… is… this?” asked an unfamiliar voice.

“Hilary! Philomena? Is that you?”

“No.”

“You are not Philomena? Oh my God! I am sorry! You must think I am crazy, telling you that you are going to kill yourself. You are not going to kill yourself. But, Philomena may one day! She is the worst…”

The girl started laughing, so I continued. “She is always on her phone emailing from the road. She told me to call her at 555-1234, which I did. But, obviously that is your number and not hers. So not only is she a danger on the road, she can’t even type right!”

Did you ever start a conversation with someone only to find out that you weren’t speaking to them?

BWAHAHAHAHAHA! Oh that is just way too funny! I’m STILL laughing! What would have been really funny is if the girl you actually called had just been emailing while driving – she would probably have totally freaked out!! Philomena is absolutely busted! Hilarious!!

  Stacy – count me in every Tuesday… And I promise to add your button…. I just didn’t get that far (never knew launching a different site was so much work!). It would have been hysterical if the girl I called was driving… Could you just imagine her face, especially with how I started off?

Philomena is in such big trouble!!!! Thanks for making me laugh!!! And yes—i have done that before–just launched head long into a convo with someone on the other end of the phone who was so totally NOT that person I intended to call. I particularly remember one incident when I misdialed my then newly divorced neighbor and rambled on thinking it was my husband…….when I discovered it wasn’t I quickly hung up and did not answer when he hit redial!!! Yikes!!! Now that would have been bad!!!!!!! Blush blush!

  Beth, yikes that would have been bad! Did he have caller ID and know it was you? I would have died when the phone rang…. I do this all the time. You would think one day I will learn my lesson, but that probably won’t happen until I do something really bad (which, knowing me, is just a matter of time…)

This is so funny! LOL!! I’ve not done this (touch wood!) but I’ve had strangers come up to me and start chatting only for them to realise they have the wrong person and I’m too polite to stop them! LOL! take care x

  Old Kitty, you are lucky.. I do this ALL the time. You would think I would learn already… but, no…Marc used to look exactly like his brother – they changed over the years. Many people would start talking to Marc thinking he was his brother. He was like you… Too polite to stop them…

I have done that where I call my best friend and start rambling about something only to find out is her kid I’m talking to.

LMAO!! OMG, that is SO funny! I’m usually getting phone calls like that. I don’t call on my cell that often, but I do get some interesting calls. But hopefully that person will take heed in your advice to someone else!

  Irene, I never get these calls, but I always make them. A few weeks before, I called someone at work who did me a huge favor. when the phone was answered I said, “I love you!!!” but, of course, I dialed the wrong number… when will I ever learn?
