By now, is there anyone in the world who hasn’t read Fifty Shades of Grey? I doubt it….

“Fifty” opened many reader’s eyes to an unconventional relationship. A relationship in which a woman allows herself to become subservient physically, emotionally, and sexually; so much so that she withstood cruel and harsh punishments in order for both her and her partner to reach sexual satisfaction. But at the end of the day, the book was a fairytale.

Diary of a Submissive, by Sophie Morgan, was the complete opposite. In her riveting memoir, Sophie shares her story of what it was like to be in a DOMINANT/ subservient relationship.

Sophie shattered all the stereotypes I had about what a sexually subservient woman would be. She is well educated, smart, sarcastic, a successful journalist and truly a strong woman. She just enjoys relinquishing her power to a sexually dominant partner.

I have to admit; when I began reading I couldn’t help wondering why a woman like Sophie would be interested in this type of lifestyle. It seemed degrading. But as I read, I had a revelation…..

Sophie didn’t wake up one morning and think, “You know what will really turn me on? I want to get canned by a man.” Instead various experiences and relationships led her down that path. She details them in a brutally honest and warm way…. So much so that you really can relate to her story and understand why she made some of the choices she did.

Diary of a Submissive is very thought provoking memoir. It really exposes the human psyche. Considering some of the things that Sophie allowed herself willingly and eagerly to be subjected to, I was amazed at some of the things she found most degrading. Equally intriguing was that after I finished reading, I was able to understand what Sophie’s found so satisfying about the lifestyle she chose. By giving power to her partner, and submitting to their needs and desires, she received complete satisfaction herself. That said, don’t go getting any ideas Marc!!!

My goodness! Well your blog post certainly grabbed my attention!! LOL! I’m about a decade behind eveyone when it comes to reading instant global best sellers (am still on the Da Vinci Code!!) so 50 Shades will have to wait!

Thank you for your review of this memoir! I did see this alongside 50 Shades in bookshops here and wondered if it was “cashing in” but then hell’s bells why not!?!? But reading your review – I think I may just have a gander. I do like memoirs in general anyway and this sounds most thought-provoking and honest!

  Old Kitty – You crack me up! I do think that this memoir is a cashing in on 50 shades, but let’s face it… So many things are. Unlike 50 this book was very well written… I love memoirs too (that is why I am working on one!)

I wasn’t to keen on reading another book similar to the 50 series. I do, however like to read and am up to trying another book. Especially after your review.

  Tami – I felt the same way… But unlike 50 that was a complete fairy tale, this one was well written and more honest. I read 50 in the spring, so enough time passed for me to read this one… I wouldn’t rush to read it either if I just finished 50

Interesting review, almost tempts me, but it’s really not my thing. And nope, I’ve not read “Fifty Shades of Grey” and have no interest in doing so.

  Fuzzy tales – I didn’t have an interest in reading 50 at first either. But the woman that helped me edit my manuscript made it an “assigned read” so that I could get some ideas to add sex into my story…. I actually did enjoy it…

I’m probably one of the few who hasn’t read, nor has any interest in reading the Fifty Shades of Grey trilogy. That said, I have always been a firm believer in “Whatever floats your boat” as long as it doesn’t hurt anyone else. Who am I to judge what other people are doing? It is interesting to know that this is something people willingly subjects themselves to.

  Susi – I didn’t have any huge desire to read it either, but I was told to read it by the woman who was helping me edit my memoir, so I did. I actually enjoyed it, but I also enjoyed that I was current with what everyone was seeming to read

Great review! I read the first book in the 50 Shades series and wasn’t thrilled with it. I still plan to read the other two though. This one sounds like a good read.

  Yvonne – I know what you mean… When I started to read #2 I wasn’t sure I had the bandwith to read it and read another one, but I did… I really liked #3, so if you don’t think you could do all three, skip two and go onto three

I did find parts of it very degrading and understood her reasons. But still I don’t think I would allow anyone to have that much control over my body regardless of how much I trusted them or practiced the use of a safe word. Maybe it’s the feminist in me but giving a man that much power to dominate seems very wrong on so many levels.

  Darcie – I can’t see myself doing it either – no pleasure would be worth the pain or humiliation. but at least after reading this book I understood her reasons, as well as understood that you never really know what someone is like. She shattered my thoughts about what a woman in a submissive relationship would be like

Sounds like this actually has depth to it… unlike 50 Shades, which started out as fanfic for Twilight (not a good thing) and by all reports is horribly sloppy writing.
