And I will always love you….. ?>

And I will always love you…..

Alex had to be put to sleep this morning….

Yesterday Marc and I brought him to the vet where he received a vitamin B12 shot, an infusion of fluids, and a syringe full of maple syrup to help his hypoglycemia.  The vet told us that we would know soon if the treatment helped.

Last night Alex started having nose bleeds.  Marc’s cousin the vet advised us how to try to stop them.  We got them under control but they came back.  Before we went to sleep, Alex cried. It was heart wrenching.  It was the first time he showed pain.

We woke up this morning and Alex’s nose was still bleeding.  Once again he cried out and we knew we had to help our boy rest and find peace.  We didn’t want him to suffer, so we made that difficult call.

Fortunately our vet was able to come to our house so we didn’t have to further upset Alex.  We had to wait for about three hours for the vet to arrive.  During that time Alex didn’t show any further signs of pain.  He let us kiss him, he let us pet him, and he even wiggled his stumpy.

Alex was the best cat any one could wish for. He was an amazing guy, who was a fighter and a trouper. He was very affectionate and funny.  He was a great friend to Marc and me.  We love him so much and we always will….

Alex, Marc and I appreciate the outpouring of love and support we received.  You all made such a difficult time much better.  I can never express my gratitude…..

I am going to take a blogging break… There will be no hopes this week as we mourn.

Alex – Mommy and Daddy love you…..

I will light a candle in his honor and watch for his bright star in the sky tonight.

These critters who love us so much, want to prepare us, and when you describe his last hours with you, I felt like he made his decision and wanted to have some special last time with you. That is so sweet. That is the ultimate way for them to let us know how much they love us.

  11. I am so, so sorry for your loss. It’s obvious how much you both loved Alex, and he, you. That love will never die. You take it with you wherever you go.

I didn’t know Alex for very long, but even during that short time, I could tell how special he was — and forever will be.

Take solace in the fact that you both always did the very best you could for him. I hope he meets Carley in Pet Heaven & tells her how great you always have been to him. Keep strong. My thoughts are with you both always.

Our boy Scooby passed away very suddenly April 1 and we understand where you are right now.
Please know that you did the right thing for him, as evidenced by how he relaxed after you made the call. He knew it would all be right soon and the sorrow & pain would be gone.
What a special and lovely cat he was.

  35. I didn’t want to accept the fact that Alex was aging and that his health was declining because his purrsonality was so youthful and vibrant in every post but all in all he needed to be laid to rest and I am sure Alex was thankful you stopped him from experiencing further discomfort.

I could feel the love that you had for Alex and I am sure he knew he was well loved. We felt we got to know you and your hubby better through your posts and hope you will return to blogging again when you have the strength to do so.

  39. Ohhhh I am so sorry for you, take all the time you need. Loosing a family member is hard no mater if they have 2 feet or 4. Making that call is the hardest and yet most loving thing to do. My heart, as heavy as it is, is with you and your family right now Hilary.

  40. We just saw the sad news of your beloved Alex’s passing on the CB. We are so sorry for the loss of your beloved mancat. He was a brave boy who had a fabulous year with Gracie. You gave him a last gift of your love by letting him go; he knew he was deeply loved and loved you just as fiercely. We will miss him. Run free, sweet Alex!

  41. Ann from Zoolatry let us know about the difficult decision you had to make today. We wanted to send you our condolences and to let you know you are not alone in your grief. We know Alex was very much loved. You let him go so that he woudn’t suffer and that is love at its’ most selfless. As homans we are limited in making our pets understand why they have to suffer and they don’t understand why they must endure pain so the kindest thing we can do is to let them go , to end their suffering.
Rest in peace sweet, angel boy. You were loved.
We send you our love and heartfelt condolences.

It’s awful to see a beloved kitty suffer. How wonderful you got to spend time with him those last minutes, I cried when you said he even wagged his stumpy tail. What a beautiful cat.

  58. My heart aches for you as you grieve the loss of sweet Alex. He sure sounded like a very sweet cat – you were both privileged to have each other. Many purrs and hugs for you.

  60. Oh HIlary I am so extremely sorry for your loss of your beloved Alex 🙁
Our pets are such a huge piece of our lives and the joy they bring is unreplaceable
I wish for you and Marc to find some comfort in knowing you had a great oppertunity
to share your lives with such an amazing friend 🙂

  61. I am so, so sorry Hilary. This must be a very sad time for you, but rest assured you did the right thing for Alex. Saying goodbye is hard, but watching him suffer slowly would have been even harder. Appreciate the time you had with him, it will help you heal. God bless you.

  62. I had just stopped by because of ICLW and this post just broke my heart – I am so incredibly sorry for your loss. He sounds like he was an amazing kitty cat, losing our pets is never easy (especially since for many of us they aren’t “like” family – they are family). Sending prayers your way.

  63. I am so so so sorry to hear that Alex has gone to the bridge. The mom is leaky when she thinks about this. Too many of our dear friends and loves have gone to the bridge. I will keep you in my thoughts and purrs. Keep Alex close to you in your heart and thoughts. Love to all at your place.

  64. Here from ICLW. So sorry for your loss of Alex. I feel for you because my Good Kitty has chronic renal failure and while she is stable for now I know how hard it is to take care of an aging cat and to prepare to say goodbye. My thoughts are with you.

  65. I’m here on the IWSG tour. I’m so sorry for your loss. We have 6 stray cats, three live in the shop because the tom in the house won’t let them in. Our eldest cat is 18 and seems to be content, but he can’t hear, sees poorly, and is shrinking. But he seems so content. I tear up just thinking that his days are numbered, and of course I don’t want him to suffer. His name is Pretty Boy and he has the most gentle spirit. Gads, look at me rambling. This is about Alex and your loss. So very sorry.
